Six years ago, I was diagnosed with infertility. I was otherwise a perfectly healthy woman in my mid-twenties, and there was no reason I shouldn’t be able to get pregnant. But even though I deeply wanted to become a mom, it just wasn’t happening.
Desperate, I started looking up every possible cause for infertility. And I came across some information that stopped me in my tracks: there were ingredients in my personal care products that are linked to health problems, like endocrine disruption, cancer…and infertility. (Affiliate links – Two of these resources, by the way, are The Honest Life, and No More Dirty Looks. Both are amazing.)
This information got me to make some serious changes in the products I buy and use everyday. And while I can’t claim it as any kind of miracle cure, I can tell you that I was able to get pregnant naturally and without any medicine or surgery.
Now that I’m a mom of two sweet littles, my campaign for a safer home is still in full swing. Just as I care about the people, foods, entertainment, and environment they come in contact with, I also concern myself with what products they come in contact with. I know that if you have littles you love, you relate. And since the beauty industry is full of loopholes, it really is up to us to be vigilant.
Ugly Secrets in the Beauty Industry
Do you know…
- the last law made concerning cosmetics was back in 1938?
- the FDA does not regulate (re: check for the safety of, or have accountability standards for) cosmetics, other than colorants added to them?
- the European Union bans 1400 harmful or questionable ingredients from cosmetics products, but the US only bans 30?
- the FDA does not have the power to recall unsafe products from the market?
- in the US, 1 in 3 women will develop cancer in their lifetime, and 1 in 8 will develop breast cancer (when 40 years ago, it was 1 in 20)?
That’s not good enough for our families. No one wants to be the cosmetics company’s guinea pig. No one wants their children to get health problems later from the products we use today.

A Mission for Change
That’s why I partner with Beautycounter, an education-first company with a mission to get safer products into everyone’s hands. The brand educates and empowers, so that we as consumers can make better and safer choices.
If that wasn’t enough, Beautycounter’s executives and employees are actively campaigning for change in the beauty industry on Capitol Hill. The advocacy that is happening now means a better future for all of us and for our children.
Finally, Beautycounter products undergo rigorous testing, and they ban 1500+ harmful or questionable ingredients. Not having to scrutinize labels? I am so about that. Even better – the products are effective, with beautiful results.
