Today we have a guest! Welcome to Rebekah Hargraves of Hargraves Home and Hearth. She and I connected on Instagram and she offered to write this post. I think it is beautiful! Enjoy 🙂
I don’t know about you dear mamas, but I know that there are days when I just feel downright weak in my marriage and in my mothering. Sometimes I feel spiritually, emotionally, and mentally sluggish, if not physically sluggish, as well! I go through moments where I feel like a failure, like my kiddos would be better off having a different mom, or like I’m letting my husband down in some way. Let’s face it – there are times when these lies invade and the Enemy successfully gets us down.
The question is – what do we do about it? What is the remedy and why are we even feeling this way in the first place?
I believe the answer to this problem is to be found in the common practice of us busy wives and mamas relegating time in prayer and in the study of God’s Word to the back burner of our lives, making it the first thing we drop when our to-do lists get long. The answer stems from the way in which we put time with the Lord at the very end of those to-do lists, oftentimes never to be crossed off during the course of the day.
Ladies, we are sucking the very lifeblood out of our marriages and mothering when we do this. We are taking the one most important practice – that of meeting with God- that would make all the difference in the world for ourselves and our families and treating it as if it is not important.
You see, being in the Word is where our strength comes from for our lives, so it follows then that we would be weakening our endurance and abilities in these areas by not being in communion with God regularly. Just as we would not go without physical food to energize and nourish our bodies, likewise we should not go without spiritual food, the Word of God, to energize and nourish our souls.
“But He [Jesus] answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” ~Matthew 4:4, NKJV
“Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.'” ~ John 4:34, NKJV
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12, NKJV
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” ~2 Timothy 3: 16-17, NKJV
(All scriptures NKJV, bold emphasis added by author.)
We are muddling our understanding of what are true right priorities when we are not regularly taking in the wisdom of God’s Word and His perspective for life, and we are likewise depriving ourselves of the comfort, knowledge, insight, encouragement, strength, and help required to live this one life well.
But do not despair, ladies! If you are a busy wife and mama and feel as if you just do not have the time to spend with the Lord, I’m going to come back next month to share some practical tips and how-tos for easily incorporating God’s Word into your everyday life! I pray you’ll be encouraged.
